A study has been published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. It showed that terbutaline, or lamisil cream, was associated with an increased number of motile sperm at the time of collection. This finding led researchers in Europe to the conclusion that terbutaline may be safe for the male reproductive system.

In a study published in the July 2023 issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, researchers from the University of Southampton conducted the first test of the terbutaline as a possible treatment for male infertility.

They used a combination of a semen analysis and a semen analysis technique to test the effectiveness of terbutaline in patients with a history of infertility. They determined that terbutaline was associated with an increased number of motile sperm at the time of collection. The increase in motile sperm at the time of collection is believed to be linked to the increase in sperm concentration in semen.

“This suggests terbutaline may not be a safe treatment for male infertility if the patient is trying to conceive,” said lead author of the study, Dr. Steven Nissen, M. D., of the University of Southampton.

Nissen and his colleagues, who were not involved in the study, said they would not be the first to test terbutaline in a patient with a history of male infertility.

“It would be a great idea to determine whether terbutaline would be an effective treatment for male infertility, and whether terbutaline would improve the quality of life for a man,” said Nissen. “If terbutaline does help with male infertility then we would have a positive result, and if it does not do so then we would be suggesting that terbutaline would be an effective treatment for male infertility.

“This study confirms the need to conduct further studies to determine whether terbutaline may be effective in male infertility and also suggests terbutaline as a treatment for male infertility,” he added.

This research was funded by the Menarini Foundation.
